Function Meets Feeling- An Editorial by Huili Jin

Huili Jin drew inspiration for this project from the emotionally triggering sound of message notifications after work hours. These everyday sounds often reignite work-related stress, making it difficult for many people to fully disconnect after leaving the office.

Her project addresses this challenge by using fashion as a tool to ease that transition, shifting both mindset and appearance from work mode to personal time.

Her research revealed a symbolic post-work ritual: office workers loosening or removing a tie. This simple gesture became a central reference in her design process. She reimagines garment construction to support smooth transitions between professional and casual settings.

Using zero-waste cutting techniques and modular elements, like detachable collars, adjustable ties, and transformable silhouettes, she creates garments that move with purpose and intention.

To deepen the psychological shift, Huili Jin adds bright, uplifting colors and vivid prints that elevate the emotional experience of dressing. These visual details complement each garment’s function, offering more than just a wardrobe change. They act as multisensory tools that help wearers unwind after a long day.

In redefining the role of clothing, Huili Jin positions fashion as an active partner in supporting mental well-being and promoting a healthier work-life balance.
