Before the special event with KEYI MAGAZINE at Groundless Factory on Friday, December 5th, we sat down with the founder to hear the story behind the creation and evolution of this unique space.
Starting from Groundless Camp—an experimental art collective founded in 2017—to the birth of Groundless Factory during the pandemic, its journey has been shaped by experimental music, installation art, dance, queer collectives, and collaborations with diverse global artists.

As we approach Friday’s event featuring Berlin Bunny, Eyes Dice, S0A, KOUSEI, and CHIZZ, let’s first take a closer look at the world that Groundless has been creating.
Hey! It’s great to have you here! Please tell us more about yourself and your journey in the industry. How did the Groundless Factory start ?

Hello! It’s an honor to be part of this interview. I originally come from a fine art background and worked in contemporary art up until 2022.
In 2017, I founded Groundless Camp, an experimental art collective aimed at creating different kinds of performance experiences by blending multiple artistic forms. In 2022, during the pandemic, I established Groundless Factory with the hope of offering people a sense of freedom in that very special and difficult time.

Groundless Factory evolved from Groundless Camp—what made you start the Camp and explore possibilities to open a club?
Groundless Camp is essentially a camp for experimental art. It began with experimental music as its foundation. By collaborating with different musicians, we tried to create live experimental performances from new perspectives and concepts. Later, we began deconstructing the stage through installation art, and incorporated elements such as contemporary dance, experimental theatre, visual art, and film to build a fully integrated experimental art environment.

Since 2018, the experimental music direction at Groundless Camp has focused on modular synthesizers combined with primal, traditional acoustic instruments, with experimental electronic music as our core area of research. This eventually became the groundwork for Groundless Factory as an underground electronic music club.
When the pandemic hit, all the sponsorship and funding that Groundless Camp relied on disappeared. I had no choice but to find a way to sustain ourselves. Running a club that could also function as an art space became the best solution.

What do you mean by “alternative” or “surreal” experiences in the context of Groundless Factory?
First of all, Groundless Factory is a place that rejects “refined aesthetics.” What we pursue is a raw, wild, and rebellious atmosphere. Architecturally, we add no decorative elements, and even the interior facilities are intentionally kept in a state of unpolished disorder. This allows ravers to express themselves in a more authentic way within this anti-polish, anti-perfection environment.
In China, truly free underground spaces are extremely rare, and we want to be something fundamentally different from the commercial venues that dominate the scene.
In terms of programming, Groundless Factory invites a wide range of electronic music producers, DJs, performers, queer collectives, and art exhibitions from around the world—offering participants a richer and more diverse experience.

What challenges did you face while operating in Groundless’s first location, and how did that space shape your identity?
The biggest challenge in the old venue came from China’s pandemic-era policies. While the rest of the world had opened up, China continued its isolation measures. Our parties were seen as a form of resistance and were shut down by government authorities. We had to find various ways to keep hosting private events, and I was also frequently taken in by various government departments for questioning.

Even after the pandemic, due to ideological reasons, the things we did were still not supported by policy. As a result, our events were frequently forced to cancel in the first two years. It wasn’t until the third year—when the economy began to decline—that the policies loosened. Even so, certain periods remain completely off-limits for events, and some themes are still not allowed.Running the venue also placed me in a role somewhat similar to a public figure. The statements or initiatives I made would often gain significant attention and, if reasonable, receive broad support.

The new space just opened, and we’ll be showcasing there in December—can’t wait to see how it feels! What are the plans for the new location ?
Yes, our new space has officially opened, and we are very much looking forward to your visit!
The new venue is located inside Beijing’s most renowned art district, so we will expand our art-related programming. We will also be open during the daytime, presenting more exhibitions, art merchandise, and free film screenings.
At night, our programming will become even more polarized: one part will focus on highly professional, cutting-edge content, while the other will support innovative work from younger artists.
