Well, I’m gypsy. In my early life, I was living in caravans most of the time. Since I was really shit at school, and knew I was going to be traveling all the time, I wanted to do something that I could do with my hands. Being able to work everywhere. So that’s why I chose to work in beauty and start to do hair. But when I was 15, I was like, I don’t want to work in a salon. I thought to myself, I would love to work with Peaches! So I moved to Berlin. There was a club at the time called Rio. I went there one Saturday night, and I brought my kit. Just like that. Scissors, mirrors and a chair. And I started cutting peopleâs hair on the dance floor. The people there were like âOh my god, this is great. Can you come back next week?â A week later I met Peaches. At some point, I had too much of Berlin. I had the idea to move to the UK, to start working in fashion. In Berlin I was already working with bands like Stereo Total and Cobra Killa, you know, German bands. I wanted to do something a bit more international and work with models and do shows. London is where I started my fashion career. I started to design clothing made out of hair, costumes made out of hair extensions. Thatâs when I began to do my own shows during London Fashion Week. When I got bored of doing catwalks I moved my work towards performances. This is when I decided to move to Paris. I think I was 21 or 22. I was already showing my work there during Paris Fashion Week, but my first performance was in Fondation Cartier with the art direction of David Lynch.

So you were traveling a lot from a very young age. Can you share some of the special moments that defined you as an artist or person?

Then in 2015 when I was in Paris I was discovering the art world. I did exhibitions in Palais de Tokyo, Fondation Cartier, Pompidou.

Would you say that you are more grounded in the music scene than into fashion?

I have always been inspired more by music than by fashion. I mean, I love fashion, but there are not as many fashion designers and photographers who inspire me the way that music inspires me. My mother used to listen to really interesting music for a mom. I think she put me in a kind of musical mindset that was really inspiring because it was always very visual. You know, she would listen to Peaches too. Very visual stuff. That’s what really attracts me to music, I think.

You started working with hair from a very young age, right?

Yes. I was already working in a salon when I was nine, sort of. Right after schoolâŠor on days when I was skipping classes. I would go to salons in the city, and ask them if I could clean the floors. I was obsessed with it. I started working in a salon professionally when I was 12. I was really terrible at school and wasnât listening to the teachers anyway. Itâs funny actually. At some point I just had to go to work because they didn’t want me in any school anymore.

But the traditional school systems are very forced and very one-sided when it comes to learning, unfortunately. We don’t always get to learn the stuff we are interested in. For example, I have never read a book. I read my emails, and I read The New York Times, but I have never read a fucking book. I don’t know why but I just can’t. I’m very hyperactive. If I read three sentences, I turn the page and will forget everything.

It is really nice that all the projects I do vary every day. One day, I do a photoshoot with you, the other day I do something with my band. And sometimes I do about two or three projects a day. Itâs a bit intense, but I love it. And my life has to be like this, doing so many things. Otherwise I just get bored or depressed.

How do you handle the workload?

The heavier the workload, the more inspired I get. Sometimes some challenges come up with clients, when the collaboration doesn’t go so well. In terms of attitude for example. I’m very controlling about my work, but I like communication. Communication is very important to me. When celebrities donât communicate, because they are too shy to say no or donât express their opinions. Well, thatâs a really big problem for me. It makes me feel lost in my work and makes me doubt myself. I like very direct people. A lot of people are, but it does happen with some young celebrities. They donât know who they are or where they are in their lives. And that is sometimes difficult to work with.

I mean, there are a lot of shy celebrities. They are insecure, you know, and they all show it in different ways. Insecurity can manifest as shyness, but sometimes people show it a bit more aggressively. Which is bad. One time in LA I was working with a famous actress. I was doing her hair and she showed a lot of attitude to the makeup artist. She was so horrible that I packed my stuff. And I said, I am sorry, but you are a cunt to people. I’m not going to work with you. So yeah. I just left and then she asked me to stay. I said that I couldnât. I need human communication. Always. So I left. I only did that once.

I used to live near Schlesisches Tor. There used to be this pub called the Barbie Deinhoffâs. It was a queer place where there was a drag King at the time, drag queens as well. And that’s when I started to do haircuts. It was every Monday night, and people would just give me whatever they could miss. So in the beginning, they would give me only like one or two euros for a haircut. I was doing a few haircuts a night and thatâs when I decided that I wanted to do this in clubs as well. Later I also was doing it at Watergate. I did it in Berghain, in the dark rooms. I was shaving the beards, the assholes as well.

I was discovering myself in Berlin. I arrived in Berlin before Berghain. It was Ostgut then. There was no Berghain. It was a good way for me to find out what I wanted to do with my life. Define the quality of my work, where I wanted to beâŠI mean, I was just a hairstylist, and I didn’t even know why I wanted to do it. And then I met these amazing people in Berlin, like Christian Meyer, Veruschka. And Peaches, obviously. All those people taught me a lot about myself and about my life. That was an amazing thing. Whenever I come to Berlin, it feels like visiting my family. Berlin has changed a lot, but when I see the people there, it still feels like family.

For sure. I mean, we all learn every day. And still now, while being on tour, I still learn. But Berlin taught me a lot. I moved to Berlin and not to London because I had no money at the time. And Berlin was really cheap. I remember I used to pay 230 euros for three bedrooms in Schlesisches Tor.

Yes. And I also learn from different communities. There are places in Berlin that Iâve gone to that still bring me inspiration that I cannot find anywhere else in the world. And these places donât even exist in Berlin anymore. There used to be this party called Black Girl Coalition. It was organized by two Black girls. And it was so good. It was one of the best parties. The people that came there still inspire me so much: the way they were partying, the way they were moving, the way they dressed themselvesâŠI can’t find anything like it anywhere in the world. I’m still looking for that. I think we all are looking for the excitement that the things we discovered in the past brought to us. Itâs like, you took cocaine for the first time: amazing. So you want more, more, more. I understand the effect. But it’s never going to be like that first time anyway.

New York has amazing clubs and parties. But then I still like the way they did it in Berlin. Or Germany in general, because Germany has amazing taste in music. It was just different. I was not in the punk scene, but I was with the new wave and dark wave community. I think it gave me some of my qualities. When people meet me sometimes they ask me if Iâm German and if I live in Berlin. Iâm like, do I look that thrash? Do I look like such a drug addict? But I think they mean it as a compliment, haha.

Can you tell us some more about your collaboration with Peaches? How did it start?
Peachesãšã®ã³ã©ãã¬ãŒã·ã§ã³ã«ã€ããŠè©³ããèãããŠãããŸããïŒ ã©ã®ããã«ããŠã¯ããŸã£ãã®ã§ããããïŒ
It started at Rio, the club. And I remember I went to her place the day after. She asked me if I could bleach her hair. So I did. And it was terrible. I did such a bad job. And I thought by myself, fuck it, Iâm just leaving you like this. And I left. But she made me come back and fix her hair. I think there was something that she liked about me. I was just on another planet at the time. I mean, I’m still am, but a different one. I think she liked it. She then asked me if I could do a music video for her. I created this giant wig, a huge, huge wig that was 15 meters long, made out of plastic extensions. We did a shoot in a park in Prenzlauer Berg. She loved the video and asked me to design a costume for her. I created scummy things like vagina wigs and such.

Peaches taught me so much. Everything she does is very political. It taught me that bringing your message into the world is much more valuable to me than working with Chanel, you know what I mean? Peaches taught me how to be political.
My best experience that I have with Peaches was when we went on our first tour. She had brown hair, again. She wanted me to bleach her hair, but I just finished a job and had no time to do it. I told her that the only time we could bleach her hair was during her DJ gig that night. She was like, letâs do it. While I was preparing the bleach, I told her to play a long track. She went down behind the DJ booth, and I immediately started adding the bleach to her hair, foils and aluminum paper included. The whole deal. When she went back up, she went on with her set, foils in her hair and everything. When she came down again, I rinsed her hair with a bottle of champagne. And then she went back up blonde. Everyone was like, what the fuck just happened. They didnât understand. It was so funny. I wish it was filmed, it was so good. Thatâs one of my best experiences with her I think.

I started to create micro collections, when I started to be more involved with the fashion world. My first show was spring/summer 2009. Nicola Formichetti was the stylist of Lady Gaga at that time. He came to my show and directly after the first show told me that she wanted to work with me. And I was like, oh my God, amazing. Just after the first show! Then things went crazy. I was with Gaga, I did The B-52s. Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Ray, Kelis. I was working with so many people.

Everything. I think at the time, people were not really used to seeing hair being used as textiles. Because the only people at that time that were doing hair were Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier. And then when I did it, basically like two seasons afterâŠeveryone did it. Everyone started using hair as a fabric, which was amazing. It was really nice for me to see people being inspired, you know?

Was this a breaking point in your career?

Definitely, yes, in a very different way. But yes, it was very big. In a commercial way. You know, Harrods in London? They contacted me because I was working with Gaga. They asked me if I wanted to have a salon. So they opened a salon for me in Harrods. I was 23 or something, it was crazy. They paid for everything. I hated working there, it was horrible. I wanted to work with Club Kids. I didnât want to work with rich people. It was too much for me.

That’s when I started to travel a bit more. I went to Japan to work for beauty brands, and did things that I never did before. My work started to become a bit more profitable. I think this is where I started to see myself more as a professional, because before I was just having fun, just doing the things that I wanted all the time. I started to put limits onto my work. Itâs when I started to have more money as well. I mean, before, I was not making that much money. I was finally able to live a bit more comfortably.
When I moved to London, I also moved there for music because I was really into dark techno, new wave and darkwave. There was this movement at the time called The New Rave, where everyone was going full neon and fluor, the neon kids. MGMT, The Klaxons, all those bands at the time. Major Lazer, you know, everything was super neon. It was the complete opposite of Berlin. More easy, more chill. I needed something different from Berlin. Thatâs why I moved there, because it was way more colorful. That’s what attracted me to the UK.
I remember the last day before moving out of Berlin. I told myself, I am never listening to techno or minimal techno again. I want to listen to Kylie Minogue. I need commercial, give me commercial! Everything is so clever and thought out in Berlin. Just give me something easy. I just want to watch a Hollywood movie, you know.
I think Berlin defined me as a person and London defined me as a professional. I learned how to deal with people. But London is not a serious city, everyone is always joking. I love it. And it’s nice, because I feel like people are already taking themselves too seriously. I always say that English people have the best taste for bad taste. Itâs something that I didn’t understand until I left.

So you had to learn to create a balance between being crazy and having a normal workflow.

There was no real normal workflow because I was working so much. Also, when I moved to London I was completely sober for I think, five years. No drugs. Nothing. I learned a lot in London. Not about balancing work, but about where I want to be. I just started a big turnaround in my work, recently. I think that right now I know exactly what I want to do. But maybe in five years, there might be another turnaround. But that’s the Gypsy mentality: wanting to do different things and moving around all the time.

So you were sober. After you moved from Berlin you got sober. Was it the amount of work or did you think, enough is enough, I want to focus right now?

When I am working a lot, I don’t do drugs. I can’t do it. If I know that I will work for like, three weeks in a row, Iâm not gonna do anything. It kills my creativity. It kills all creativity. I think drugs are not creative.
They’re great to escape from things. My first drug is working. I love working so much. That just inspires me by itself. I don’t really need other stuff. I mean, I did have some time in my career where I was taking stuff, even a few years ago. I was taking so many things. I was not happy with my work, you know? Maybe I was also not hanging out with the right people. I don’t like putting things on other people but I think I was having more fun in my own life. As soon as I moved to New York, I started laughing. And when I start laughing, everything is great. Laughing is my drug, I think.

I think London is very creative in a fun way. They always try to bring something fun into luxury. Milan I don’t like. It was so mean and boring. France is interesting because the French people have egos, always thinking theyâre the best at everything. But what I do like about itâŠitâs very sought out. There is nothing easy about France. Everything takes time. Everything is carefully decided and planned. But then there is a taste that I like. Because they do limit you. Not like in London, in London they let you do whatever the fuck you want. Itâs great. Just like in LA: they will literally just let you do anything. And they donât care, because they think everything is amazing there. Paris is a very chic city. The way they work feels nice. It is where I create my best work because there we take our time, and we think everything through really well.
I do love New York, but itâs a bit commercial, you know. You can’t do anything detailed and fun in New York, everything has to be very sleek and polished. But once again, that’s where you make the most money, you know, commercial stuff. That’s why we live in New York.

In music there were two dreams. It was Diamanda Galás and Grace Jones. And I worked with both of them. And that was amazing. In fashion, my dream was to work with Vivienne Westwood. And I have worked with Vivienne Westwood for about five years now. I was lucky to meet her. She was my dream. I think she was so genuine. She was one of the few real people. Right now, I love Dries van Noten. I would love to work for COMME des GARÃONS. I love what the Japanese School of Fashion is doing in general, I go there all the time. Before COVID I used to go to Japan all the time for resourcing, for inspiration. Especially Kyoto, HiroshimaâŠI used to go there about three times a year because I love being alone there and looking at the street or the jungle. It was a big source of inspiration.

Or really? Thatâs amazing. I mean, Japan is likeâŠtheyâre so annoying. Because they do everything better than anyone else. I had the best French food in Japan and also the best Italian food in Japan. And I donât know why. I love the detail of every single thing that they do. The way itâs thought out is really amazing. I have also watched many Japanese TV shows and they are so funny. It will be a place without worry, people just go there to have fun. I know some people hate theme parks. But when I was a kid, coming from a very poor family, theme parks felt like places without worries. The crazy music, the many different colored lights, everyone smiling. Eating colorful things. I love this, I want to create a place like this. So that’s my dream. Completely.

I’m working on a cabaret piece in Paris. That will be every week for one year. It’s really funny to speak about music when I never made music, but I started to do music now. It feels a bit pretentious for some reason, because I don’t know the domain yet. But I’m working on that as well. I’ve been working on it for two years. And then there’s always my day-to-day life, all the shows and the shootings and everything. I bought a place in Paris and I’m designing everything for that as well. That’s such an exciting project for me as well, to do all the interior design. I have a TV show coming out with Lâoreal. Many things. Itâs a lot every day, but I like it.
