Nothing marks the mid-1990s more than the track “i9.” Not because it was widely popular, but because of the reason it was created in the first place. In 1995, Techno music was still growing—still introducing itself to new listeners around the world. It was just beginning to shed its maternal connection to Rave Culture, which had emerged about a decade earlier, and was starting to develop its own distinct identity. While Rave had become deeply rooted in parts of Europe. Especially the UK, Belgium, and the Netherlands by 1995, all of Europe, and now the Americas, were blazing hot for this newer form of Techno. It was intense. We were intense. And the music we were making was relentless.

By that time, the flimsy, happy-go-lucky 4/4 beats of the mid-1980s had been transformed into nose-bleeding jackhammers—specially designed to infiltrate minds and take no prisoners. It was the dark matter we had all been waiting for. The substance we needed to have.

And with this special substance came incredible parties and events. DJs would strategically pack their heavy vinyl record boxes like they were heading out on an African safari—loaded with ammunition designed to test any sound system to its limits.

For that night at the Liquid Room in Tokyo. I knew I needed something that would silence any doubt about whether Techno Music had truly arrived. I wanted something that marked both an end and a beginning. A new way to think about dance music.

That something was called “i9”.

This limited-edition, unreleased version of “i9”. It is a brand-new 2025 remix by Jeff Mills of the original track. Marking the beginning of the 30th anniversary celebration of Jeff Mills: Live at Liquid Room. The iconic mix CD where “i9” was first ever played. Not yet pressed to vinyl, the track was originally performed using a 10” reel-to-reel tape player during his legendary set. This release is the first glimpse into a forthcoming reissue of the mix CD, along with additional anniversary elements to come.
