Marissa was an open-format DJ during her college years, making a name for herself, and Rae joined shortly after. The first track we created almost a year and a half ago was ‘Keep Me Blushin’’. When we created the track, we aimed for something with a more cinematic breakdown to pay homage to our classical background and our dreams of becoming music score writers in the future. Upon finishing it, it evoked so many emotions: it was haunting, yet beautiful, hard yet soft with the airy, almost Siren-like vocals. We wanted to continue building off of these qualities in our subsequent tracks. Due to our heritage, there is a lot of taboo surrounding the depiction of a seductive or even sexy side to music. Even as artists, and considering how the music industry often capitalizes on it, we’ve refrained from showcasing that aspect of ourselves. We believe our EP, ‘Keep Me Blushin’’, showcases our attempt to break down these stigmas in our Asian culture and even our own internal struggles while remaining true to ourselves and portraying it through our music.

How has the Korean music scene influenced your musical evolution? And how would you introduce your label to a new audience?
Our biggest influence for the Korean music scene would be our parents. We always grew up listening to the euro dance-inspired K-pop music back in the 90s and early 2000s, but we didn’t realize we were listening to what shaped the foundation for our love for dance music. We recently made our first trip back to Korea together in 2023 for a gig in Busan and have not been fully immersed in the Korean music scene. There were a lot of amazing things we’ve been seeing over the years in the techno scene in Korea. Our label is based out of Washington DC, and we created it with the sole goal of giving new artists an opportunity to showcase their music to the world.The label is full of new artists you may have never heard of, giving you their true artistry and not always adhering to today’s trends or what is currently hot. It’s all about moving people and not about genres, so you may find some groovy basslines, some trance-inspired melodies, or heavy-hitting kicks that will rock the audience… But they are all music we believe has a moment on the dance floor and can truly challenge the listener to find music they never thought they would love. We hope it continues to push artists to be their authentic selves and share that legacy on our label.

Could you share your daily workflow with us? How do you typically find inspiration and connect with music? 
In reality, we still maintain day jobs in the IT industry, which help us support our passion for music and this journey. We work from 8-5, and after work hours, we take a quick breather to feed ourselves and then head down to the studio in our basement. It’s a stress relief for us to take that time to create music. Coming from a classical background, Marissa effortlessly tackles the sound design and foundational ideas for a track, while Rae analyzes all of the intricate elements and creates a flow that can carry through the track with his arrangement. In this final phase, we both come together for the final touches in the mix-down and mastering process, and this is when the track really comes together. This process has really propelled us to get our tracks over the finish line in our productions, and we believe we have a great synergy between us through our time in the studio. Inspiration can literally come from anywhere. You just need to pay enough attention to give it meaning throughout your daily life. We’ve played many sets in front of many different crowds and audiences over the years but it’s so cool to hear that people’s general feedback on our sets is that they can’t really categorize our β€œsound.” It’s techno at its core, but it’s groovy, ethereal, cinematic, and emotional yet driving with pounding kicks and bringing forth many different percussive textures that each track presents. It is purely representative of the flow of the moment. During college, we both took a course called ‘MUSIC 101: Tonal Theory’ and we thought it was a perfect representation and homage to our classical background which we can both relate to, as well as our motto of making an impact and moving that ‘one person’ who connects with our music. We did have to eliminate the space between the words so it’s all one word like this: β€œTonalTheory” because we quickly found out that when you google search for β€œTonal Theory,” you get results to academic articles and textbooks so we didn’t want to confuse our future fans… haha

What are your further plans for this year ?
As artists, we would love to continue pushing ourselves through our music releases and getting them heard as much as possible. It feels like a pivotal year for us. As Asian Americans, there aren’t many of us who venture into the music scene, as it doesn’t always align with the expectations of immigrant families. We’ve always wanted to see people like us with a seat at the table, proving this isn’t just a silly “passion project” that we constantly trick ourselves into thinking. Also, we would definitely love to branch out into Asia and Europe a bit more this year and travel more! As label owners, we are aiming to do 2 VA releases by the end of the year. We recently hosted a demo drop session right before our show in Los Angeles, and we were so impressed by all of the talented producers in the LA scene that we are really looking forward to compiling all of their great work and sharing it with the world.
