Drawing inspiration from their classical backgrounds, their versatility and innovative vision captivate audiences across all music genres. Having released numerous tracks locally and internationally, the duo established their own label, Undertone, in 2021. Undertone embodies their distinctive high-energy techno style while pushing the boundaries of genre conventions, aiming to provide a platform for like-minded producers to showcase their artistry. Recent releases from Undertone have garnered support from multiple industry-leading producers.

Hey, both of you! It’s fantastic to have you here! Could you please share more about yourselves and your journey in the industry? You have Korean roots—how did you end up in Washington, DC?

Such a pleasure to connect with you as well, and thank you so much for giving us an opportunity to share our journey. We are Marissa & Rae from TonalTheory, a self-taught DJ/producer duo based in Washington DC. We embarked on our journey in the music industry over 12 years ago. Marissa was an open-format DJ during her college years, making a name for herself, and Rae joined shortly after. After graduating, we delved deeper into the music scene in DC, a city thriving with many great underground collectives. Over the past couple of years, we have been hosting techno events, and with the launch of our own imprint, Undertone, in 2021, we began focusing on uplifting artists who aren’t primarily focused on DJing, providing a platform to highlight their talent and work.

Marissa’s mother immigrated to the US in the 90s, and Rae and his family also immigrated to the US in the early 2000s. It was certainly a struggle, but our families wanted the best for our futures, and we are immensely grateful for all the opportunities we were able to seize.

만나게 되어 너무 반갑습니다. 저희의 경험과 여정에 대해 나눌 수 있는 기회를 주셔서 너무 감사해요. TonalTheory의 마리사와 레이라고 합니다. 워싱턴 D.C.를 기반으로 활동하고 있는 DJ이자 프로듀서에요. 업계에 처음 발을 들인건 12년 전이였어요. 마리사는 대학 시절부터 오픈 포맷 DJ로 활동하며 인지도를 얻어왔고, 그 뒤 레이가 합류했어요. 졸업 후, 워싱턴 D.C.의 음악 씬에 조금 더 깊게 알아가게 되었는데, 유능한 언더그라운드 컬렉티브가 활발하게 활동하고 있는 도시였어요. 지난 몇 년간, 테크노 행사를 개최해 왔고, 2021년에는 독자적인 레이블, Undertone을 런칭하며 단순히 음악을 알리는 것을 넘어 다양한 예술인의 작품과 재능이 주목받을 수 있는 플랫폼을 제공하기 시작했습니다.

마리사의 경우, 어머니가 90대에 미국으로 이민을 오셨고, 레이와 레이의 가족도 2000년 초에 미국으로 이민을 오게되었어요. 이민자로서 어려움이 많았지만, 가족이 함께 더 나은 미래를 위해 최선을 다하고 있어요. 물론 저희가 가지게 된 많은 기회에 대한 감사함도 항상 가지고 있고요.

We’re thrilled to delve deeper into your upcoming EP. Could you provide some insights into the creative journey behind your concept ?

The first track we created almost a year and a half ago was ‘Keep Me Blushin’’. When we created the track, we aimed for something with a more cinematic breakdown to pay homage to our classical background and our dreams of becoming music score writers in the future. Upon finishing it, it evoked so many emotions: it was haunting, yet beautiful, hard yet soft with the airy, almost Siren-like vocals. We wanted to continue building off of these qualities in our subsequent tracks. Due to our heritage, there is a lot of taboo surrounding the depiction of a seductive or even sexy side to music. Even as artists, and considering how the music industry often capitalizes on it, we’ve refrained from showcasing that aspect of ourselves. We believe our EP, ‘Keep Me Blushin’’, showcases our attempt to break down these stigmas in our Asian culture and even our own internal struggles while remaining true to ourselves and portraying it through our music.

곧 발매 예정인 새 앨범에 대한 기대가 정말 큰데요, 눈과 귀로 경험할 수 있는 컨셉 그 뒤에 숨겨진 제작 과정에 대해 조금 이야기 해주실 수 있을까요?

첫 번째 트랙 ‘Keep Me Blushin’은 1년 반 전에 만들었어요. 그 당시, 영화적인 분위기를 통해 클래식한 배경과 작곡가로서의 꿈을 표현했습니다. 트랙을 완성한 후, 정말 많은 감정이 들었는데요, 공포스러웠지만 아름다웠고, 단단하지만 공기처럼, 마치 사이렌의 목소리 같이 부드러웠어요. 이러한 요소를 유지하며 다음 트랙을 쌓아가고 싶었습니다. 음악 속에서 유혹 또는 섹시함을 묘사하는 것에 대해 문화적 제한이 존재하곤 합니다. 예술가로서, 음악 업계 내에서 이러한 묘사가 어떻게 활용되는지를 고려해보았고, 그럼에도 불구하고 우리 안에 그러한 측면을 드러내는 것을 삼가하고 있었어요. 하지만 ‘Keep Me Blushin’을 통해 아시아권 문화, 그리고 우리 자신 속 갈등을 깨는 새로운 시도와 동시에 정체성을 유지하는 새로운 시도를 표현했습니다.

How has the Korean music scene influenced your musical evolution? And how would you introduce your label to a new audience?

Our biggest influence for the Korean music scene would be our parents. We always grew up listening to the euro dance-inspired K-pop music back in the 90s and early 2000s, but we didn’t realize we were listening to what shaped the foundation for our love for dance music. We recently made our first trip back to Korea together in 2023 for a gig in Busan and have not been fully immersed in the Korean music scene. There were a lot of amazing things we’ve been seeing over the years in the techno scene in Korea. Our label is based out of Washington DC, and we created it with the sole goal of giving new artists an opportunity to showcase their music to the world.The label is full of new artists you may have never heard of, giving you their true artistry and not always adhering to today’s trends or what is currently hot. It’s all about moving people and not about genres, so you may find some groovy basslines, some trance-inspired melodies, or heavy-hitting kicks that will rock the audience… But they are all music we believe has a moment on the dance floor and can truly challenge the listener to find music they never thought they would love. We hope it continues to push artists to be their authentic selves and share that legacy on our label.

음악적 발전에 있어 한국 음악이 미친 영향에 대해 알고 싶어요. 그리고 새롭게 만나게 될 청중에게 Undertone을 소개한다면 어떻게 표현할 수 있을까요?

가장 큰 영향은 한국에서 많은 시간을 보낸 부모님이였어요. 90년대와 2000년대 초반 유로 댄스에 영감을 받은 K-pop 음악을 들으며 자랐지만, 이러한 성장 배경이 우리가 댄스 음악을 사랑하게 될 시발점인줄은 몰랐었죠. 2023년, 부산에서의 공연을 위해 처음 한국을 방문했지만 한국 음악 씬에 깊게 빠져들지는 않았었어요. 그 이후, 몇 년간 한국에서 보여진 테크노 음악 씬은 저희 모두를 놀라게 했죠.  Undertone은 워싱턴 D.C.를 기반으로 하고 있으며, 새로운 아티스트에게 독창적인 예술성을 국제적으로 선보일 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이 목표입니다. 이제껏 들어보지 못했던 새로운 아티스트가 보여주는 유행에 고수되지 않은 진정한 예술성을 만나볼 수 있어요. 특정 장르에 제한되지 않고 사람을 움직이는 사운드를 지향하다 보니 종종 그루비한 베이스 라인, 트랜스에서 영감을 받은 멜로디, 충격적인 헤비 킥 등 의외의 요소를 만나볼 수 있어요. 하지만 이런 음악이야말로 댄스 플로어에서 어떠한 순간을 기억할 수 있게 한다고 믿습니다. 예상치 못했던 사운드와 사랑에 빠지는 그 순간, 새로운 도전이 이루어지는거죠. 이러한 환경 속에서 아티스트가 진정한 자신의 모습으로 Undertone과 함께할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Could you share your daily workflow with us? How do you typically find inspiration and connect with music? 

In reality, we still maintain day jobs in the IT industry, which help us support our passion for music and this journey. We work from 8-5, and after work hours, we take a quick breather to feed ourselves and then head down to the studio in our basement. It’s a stress relief for us to take that time to create music. Coming from a classical background, Marissa effortlessly tackles the sound design and foundational ideas for a track, while Rae analyzes all of the intricate elements and creates a flow that can carry through the track with his arrangement. In this final phase, we both come together for the final touches in the mix-down and mastering process, and this is when the track really comes together. This process has really propelled us to get our tracks over the finish line in our productions, and we believe we have a great synergy between us through our time in the studio. Inspiration can literally come from anywhere. You just need to pay enough attention to give it meaning throughout your daily life. We’re at a point in our creative journey where the ideas are constantly flowing, and it’s just a matter of balancing our time and feeding our creativity.

일상 속 작업 과정에 대해 이야기 해주실 수 있나요? 보통 어떤곳에서 영감을 받고 음악으로 풀어내는지 궁금해요.

저희 모두 IT 업계에서 일하며 음악에 대한 열정과 작업을 금전적으로 지원하고 있어요. 오전 8시부터 오후 5시까지 근무 후 짧은 휴식을 취하고 바로 지하에 있는 스튜디오로 향합니다. 사운드를 만드는 시간은 근무 스트레스를 해소시켜주곤해요. 마리사가 트랙의 사운드 디자인과 기본기를 다루고, 레이는 구체적인 요소를 분석 하고 흐름에 맞추어 배열합니다. 전반적인 작업이 끝나면 믹스 다운과 마스터링을 함께 작업하며 최종적으로 다듬어요. 이러한 과정과 분배가 트랙의 완성도에 큰 도움이 되고있어요. 스튜디오에서 함께 보내는 시간 속에서 긍정적인 시너지를 만들어내고 있기도 하고요. 영감은 어디에서나 찾을 수 있는 것 같아요. 그러한 영감을 찾기 위해서는 일상 생활 속에 많은 주의를 기울여야 합니다. 창작 과정에서 새로운 아이디어는 무한히 흐르고 있으며, 시간과 창의력을 균형있게 조절하고 유지하는 것이 중요해요.

Additionally, how would you describe your sound? Lastly, what’s the stays behind the name TonalTheory?

We’ve played many sets in front of many different crowds and audiences over the years but it’s so cool to hear that people’s general feedback on our sets is that they can’t really categorize our “sound.” It’s techno at its core, but it’s groovy, ethereal, cinematic, and emotional yet driving with pounding kicks and bringing forth many different percussive textures that each track presents. It is purely representative of the flow of the moment. During college, we both took a course called ‘MUSIC 101: Tonal Theory’ and we thought it was a perfect representation and homage to our classical background which we can both relate to, as well as our motto of making an impact and moving that ‘one person’ who connects with our music. We did have to eliminate the space between the words so it’s all one word like this: “TonalTheory” because we quickly found out that when you google search for “Tonal Theory,” you get results to academic articles and textbooks so we didn’t want to confuse our future fans… haha

TonalTheory의 사운드를 어떻게 설명할 수 있나요? 그리고, 팀 이름이 담고있는 의미가 있을까요?

수 년에 걸쳐 정말 다양한 관객 앞에서 많은 셋을 연주해왔지만, “정확히 분류할 수 없는 ‘사운드’”라는 피드백을 가장 좋아합니다. 각 트랙마다 다양한 타악기의 사운드를 활용한 요소가 돋보여요. 테크노라는 장르를 핵심으로, 그루비하고, 황홀하며, 시네마틱하 감정적이면서도 강렬 킥이 있는 사운드를 선사합니다. 순간의 흐름을 순수하게 표현한다고 볼 수 있죠. 대학 시절, 음조 이론(Tonal Theory)에 관한 강의를 들었어요. 이거야말로 우리 둘 모두가 공감할 수 있고, 우리의 배경을 잘 담을 수 있는 이름이라고 생각했어요. 우리의 음악과 소통할 수 있는 그 ‘한 사람’에게 영향력을 미치고 싶다는 팀의 모토를 잘 담고 있기도 합니다. Tonal과 Theory사이에 들어가는 띄워쓰기를 제거하긴 해야했어요. ‘Tonal Theory’를 검색할 경우 음조이론에 대한 학술 논문과 교재에 대한 결과가 많이 나오거든요. 저희를 새롭게 알게된 팬들이 얼마나 혼란스럽겠어요! 하하…

What are your further plans for this year ?

As artists, we would love to continue pushing ourselves through our music releases and getting them heard as much as possible. It feels like a pivotal year for us. As Asian Americans, there aren’t many of us who venture into the music scene, as it doesn’t always align with the expectations of immigrant families. We’ve always wanted to see people like us with a seat at the table, proving this isn’t just a silly “passion project” that we constantly trick ourselves into thinking. Also, we would definitely love to branch out into Asia and Europe a bit more this year and travel more! As label owners, we are aiming to do 2 VA releases by the end of the year. We recently hosted a demo drop session right before our show in Los Angeles, and we were so impressed by all of the talented producers in the LA scene that we are really looking forward to compiling all of their great work and sharing it with the world.

올해 계획은 어떻게 되시나요?

창작을 하는 예술가로서, 음악을 통해 계속해서 도전하고 많은 사람들을 만나고 싶어요. 저희에게 아주 중요한 한 해가 될 것 같아요. 아시아계 미국인으로서 음악 시장에 발을 들이는 사람이 많지 않아요. 이민자 가족의 기대와 어긋나는 모습일수도 있기 때문인 것 같아요. 우리는 항상 더 많은 아시아계 미국인이 음악 업계에 몸을 담고 있기를 원해왔어요. 우리의 작업이 허상의 것을 추구하는 “열정 프로젝트”가 아님을 증명하고 싶습니다. 이번 해에는 아시아와 유럽대륙으로 더 넓게 나아가고 여행하고 싶어요. 레이블의 대표로서, 올해 말까지 2개의 VA발매를 목표로 하고 있습니다. 최근 로스앤젤레스 공연에서 데모 드롭 세션을 진행했었는데, 로스앤젤레스에서 활동하는 유능한 프로듀서를 많이 만날 수 있었어요. 그들의 작업을 전세계와 나눌 수 있기를 기대하고 있습니다.
