As Groundless Factory joins forces with KEYI MAGAZINE for a special night on December 5th, the spotlight turns to one of the artists shaping the pulse of Beijing’s new underground: SØA.
Both a DJ and tattoo artist, she has forged a distinct sonic identity marked by hypnotic tension, explosive rhythms, and instinctive flow. Emerging from Beijing’s live music culture and finding new artistic freedom during the pandemic, SØA brings a sound that is intimate yet fiercely energetic.
随着 Groundless Factory 与 KEYI MAGAZINE 即将在 12 月 5 日共同打造特别之夜，我们将目光投向本次阵容中最具能量的一位艺术家—SØA。
身兼 DJ 与纹身师，她以催眠般的张力、爆裂的节奏与直觉性的流动感，塑造了自己独特的声音气质。从北京的现场文化中成长，并在疫情期间找到新的表达方向，SØA 的音乐既亲密，又充满力量。
Ahead of her set, we spoke with her about her beginnings, inspirations, and what she hopes to share with the crowd at Groundless Factory.
在她登台之前，我们与 SØA 聊了聊她的起点、灵感，以及她希望在 Groundless Factory 带给观众的体验。
How are you ? Could you introduce yourself ?
你好吗？可以介绍一下自己吗？
大家好我是SØA, 是一名来自北京的DJ和纹身师。
Hello everyone, I’m SØA — a DJ and tattoo artist from Beijing.
How did you started with music and tattoo ?
你是如何开始接触音乐和纹身的？
小的时候喜欢听摇滚乐，慢慢参与进了各种摇滚现场live house，因此认识了很多很酷玩儿乐队的朋友。
纹身可以说是让我把喜欢画画的爱好和摇滚乐结合起来的一种自由表达方式吧。
真正进入dj是疫情极度压抑的第二年，我开始寻找新的调频空间。这个世界让我感受到空前的自由，震撼和安全。
做dj和纹身其实是一种相似的表达，只是媒介不同。When I was young, I loved listening to rock music and gradually got involved in various rock gigs and live venues. Through that, I met many cool friends who played in bands.
Tattooing became a way for me to combine my love for drawing with the spirit of rock — a form of free expression.
I truly got into DJing during the second year of the pandemic, when everything felt extremely suffocating. I started searching for a new frequency, a new space. That world gave me a sense of freedom, intensity, and safety like never before.
Being a DJ and a tattoo artist is, in a way, a similar form of expression — just through different mediums.
How would you describe your sound in three words?
如果用三个词来形容你的声音/风格，你会怎么说？
催眠，爆裂，弹跳，暗流。
Hypnotic, explosive, bouncy, with an undercurrent.
Can you tell us more about underground music scene in Beijing ?
你能跟我们多介绍一些北京的地下音乐场景吗？
北京新生代活力满满，原始，纯粹。舞池里的真实一直都很让人感动。
Beijing’s new generation is full of energy — raw and pure. The authenticity you feel on the dancefloor is always deeply moving.
What’s your favorite moment during a rave?
在派对（rave）中，你最喜欢的时刻是什么？
最喜欢集体共鸣的那些时刻，不是为了跳舞而跳舞。也不仅是狂欢，我喜欢感动胜于狂欢。
My favorite moments are those of collective resonance — when people aren’t dancing just for the sake of dancing. It’s more than partying. I prefer the moments of emotion over pure frenzy.
What’s the first thing you want people to feel when you start your set?
当你开始你的表演时，你最希望观众首先感受到什么？
首先一定是vibe 它不一定是具体的旋律
更不是歌词 可以说是一种声音气质的捕捉，或者直觉吧The vibe, definitely. It doesn’t have to be a specific melody, and even less so lyrics. It’s more like capturing a certain sonic texture — or simply intuition.
Which artists have inspired you the most during your journey so far?
在你目前的旅程中，哪些艺术家对你启发最大？
这个人一定会是MARRØN，他把我对声音力学以及质感的理解推向了从未有过的地方，他的set激活了我身体中从未被碰触的部分。虽然我放的音乐和他大相径庭，但我确确实实被他影响了五年。
It has to be MARRØN. He pushed my understanding of sonic mechanics and textures to a place I had never reached before. His sets activated parts of my body that had never been touched.
Even though the music I play is very different from his, he has truly influenced me for five years.
How do you prepare yourself before playing a high-energy set?
在演出高能量的现场之前，你是如何准备自己的？
我会把近期收藏的音乐认真挑选一番，找一些适合这个时间和场景的，我排set会花很长时间，也需要很多能量。所以高能演出前，我一定会休息好，哈哈。
I carefully go through the music I’ve collected recently and choose tracks that fit the specific time and setting. Preparing a set takes a long time and a lot of energy. So before a high-energy show, I always make sure to rest well, haha.
What can the crowd expect from your performance at Groundless Factory?
