Constructing the Sublime: Ryo Kato at Galerie SLP

On 24 April, Galerie Sara Lily Perez will open with a new solo exhibition by Berlin-based Japanese Artist Ryo Kato. The exhibition titled NEUER GLAUBE stages images that refuse to settle. Roses push through wreckage, light slices across fractured forms, and bodies emerge only to dissolve again. Nothing holds still for long. This collection of works signifies a critical junction where the traditions of classical painting meet the urgent anxieties of the twenty first century. The title translates to New Faith, a provocative choice that demands an investigation into what remains sacred in an era defined by ecological instability and technological saturation.
Ryo Kato paints with a precision that recalls Northern Renaissance detail. Each canvas gathers dense layers of information and shows a world in constant change. Instead of simply depicting scenes, Kato builds a space where nature and human structures fully merge. The paint itself records the complexity of our current geological moment. In Neuer Glaube, Kato draws on the idea of the sublime. The works present landscapes where industrial remains and organic forms exist side by side. Despite the chaotic elements, the scenes feel still. Clear, careful brushwork gives equal importance to every detail, from machine fragments to leaves. This balance creates a quiet but unsettling vision of coexistence.
In these works, the concept of faith undergoes a significant transformation. It is not a faith rooted in traditional dogma but a faith found in the persistence of existence itself. Circular forms and horizon lines point to cycles of time, even within ruined landscapes. Bright, vivid colors replace apocalyptic gloom, expressing a resilient, enduring vitality.
The exhibition at Galerie SLP, located in Bikini Berlin, places Kato’s work within a hub of design and urban life. The setting reflects the paintings’ themes, blending art with a space shaped by human activity. As visitors move through the gallery, they experience an environment that echoes Kato’s complexity and invites reflection on our shared future.
