Umwelt has crafted his most powerful techno album to date and solidified himself as an exceptional artist and titanic figure of modern electronic music. Interview by Greg Bacinski

Umwelt is a truly rare underground electronic artist in the world of Techno and is, without doubt, one of the most important and prolific French electronic producers of a generation.

A techno activist since the 90’s boasting over 50 releases to date. Throughout his career he has crafted a pure analog, unmistakable, signature sound, mixing dark, cinematic melancholy with the electro-techno grit he is so renowned for.

안녕하세요, 초대해주셔서 감사합니다. 저는 Umwelt로 알려진 Fred입니다. 저는 90년대부터 리옹에서 활동한 일렉트로 & 테크노 프로듀서 겸 DJ입니다.

We couldn’t see many interviews with you online. Seems like you are a person which prefers to speak with music not words online. Why so? How do you perceive the online presence these days?

Maybe yes, the music and what it represents for the imagination can be a good answer, no need for more words sometimes.

Umwelt.. says,, Social network it’s a good tool to promote music.´´

Personally, I’m more focused on the musical side, nowadays to me, too many profile artists are more focused on their selfies and showing their Dj life than on music. Thanks to technology being Dj and producer is easier and people have more time to be focused on their own person. It s funny to see Instagram which is a social network dedicated to photography becoming the network’s number one for music promotion. Unfortunately, nowadays the value of the music and artist profile is based on the number of followers, like… This system doesn’t allow introverted artists to be visible and uniformize the production and djing. But the underground scene is still strong and open for this kind of profile.

I’m curious to see the next step when the algorithm will do the music instead of the producer and DJ.

Recently a friend of mine send me feedback from A.I chat GPT to the question « how to make a track like an Umwelt ». It was funny but also terrific. .

I hope this A.I push the future of the artist to innovate in music or art, let’s see.

온라인에서 인터뷰를 많이 볼 수 없었는데요. 온라인에서 말보다는 음악으로 이야기하는 것을 선호하는 사람인 것 같습니다. 왜 그런가요? 요즘 온라인을 어떻게 인식하고 계신가요?

음악과 음악이 상상력을 표현하는 것이 좋은 대답이 될 수 있고 때로는 더 많은 말이 필요하지 않을 수도 있습니다.
소셜 네트워크는 음악을 홍보할 수 있는 좋은 도구입니다. 개인적으로 저는 음악적인 측면에 더 집중하고 있는데, 요즘에는 너무 많은 프로필 아티스트들이 음악보다 셀카나 디제이 생활을 보여주는 데 더 집중하는 것 같아요. 기술 덕분에 디제이 겸 프로듀서가 되는 것이 더 쉬워졌고 사람들은 자기 자신에 집중할 시간이 더 많아졌습니다. 사진 전용 소셜 네트워크인 Instagram이 음악 홍보를 위한 최고의 네트워크가 된 것은 재미있는 일입니다. 안타깝게도 요즘에는 음악과 아티스트 프로필의 가치가 팔로워 수에 따라 결정됩니다. 이 시스템에서는 내성적인 아티스트가 눈에 띄지 않고 프로듀싱과 디제잉이 획일화될 수 있습니다. 하지만 언더그라운드 씬은 여전히 이런 종류의 프로필에 대해 강력하고 개방적입니다.
프로듀서와 디제이 대신 알고리즘이 음악을 하는 다음 단계가 궁금합니다. 최근 제 친구가 인공지능 채팅 GPT에서 “어떻게 하면 움웰트 같은 트랙을 만들 수 있느냐”는 질문을 보내왔어요. 재미있으면서도 대단했어요. 이 인공지능이 아티스트의 음악이나 예술에 혁신을 가져올 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Some time ago we premiered a track from your latest release at Monnom Black! Such a pearl. Could you tell us more about that collaboration?

Dax J contacted me for tracks on Monnom Black.

It was an honor, Dax j is an artist I respect a lot and it is the same for his label as well.

I love working on EPs or LPs for labels with a big identity and Monnom Black is the perfect inspiration for me

I immediately started working on tracks and trying to stick to the identity of the label while also keeping mine.

얼마 전 모노놈 블랙에서 최신 발매작의 트랙을 선보였습니다! 정말 멋진 곡이죠. 그 콜라보레이션에 대해 자세히 말씀해 주시겠어요?

Dax J가 Monnom Black에 수록할 트랙을 구해달라고 연락해왔어요. Dax j는 제가 존경하는 아티스트이고 그의 레이블도 마찬가지니 영광이었어요. 저는 정체성이 뚜렷한 레이블을 위해 EP나 LP 작업을 하는 것을 좋아하는데, Monnom Black은 저에게 완벽한 영감을 주었습니다. 저는 곧바로 트랙 작업을 시작했고 레이블의 정체성을 지키면서도 저의 정체성도 지키려고 노력했습니다.

Speaking about the process of your work and particularly about that album, how do you usually bring your ideas to life? 

I use different analog setups, it depends on the mood. I love being restricted by machines to try to get the most out of them, my process is a little bit chaotic and based on feeling.

There’s no particular process, I’m trying a lot of things in the studio, experimenting, pushing myself into unknown territories; crossing my limits…

And when I find something like «a  theme » , fx, or energy in the rhythm… then I work and develop the track around this idea

I go to a sci-fi adventure through space for electro or raw energy mood for techno, but in both cases, it’s important to tell a story by building something exalting.

작업 과정, 특히 이번 앨범에 대해 말씀드리자면, 보통 어떻게 아이디어를 실현시키나요?

저는 기분에 따라 다양한 아날로그 설정을 사용합니다. 저는 기계를 최대한 활용하기 위해 기계의 제약을 받는 것을 좋아하고, 제 작업 과정은 약간 혼란스럽고 느낌에 기반합니다. 특별한 프로세스는 없고 스튜디오에서 많은 것을 시도하고, 실험하고, 미지의 영역으로 자신을 밀어붙이고, 한계를 넘나들며… 그리고 “테마”와 같은 것을 찾으면 리듬의 FX 또는 에너지… 그런 다음이 아이디어를 중심으로 작업하고 트랙을 개발합니다. 일렉트로의 경우 우주를 통한 공상 과학 모험으로 가거나 테크노의 경우 날 에너지 무드로 가지만 두 경우 모두 고양 된 무언가를 구축하여 이야기를 전달하는 것이 중요합니다.

There are other aspects of the album which feel important to us. Speaking about the name itself ‘’ Dead Eyes Society´´What does it mean to you?

I’m talking about the system and society blinded by a lot of politics, governments, capitalism systems and corrupted networks.

we are destroying our only planet and this is weird and sad. A part of the destruction of our own planet comes from this capitalist system and makes us disenchanted and weak. But hopefully, some of us have the force  to fight and not stay in silence.

앨범에는 우리에게 중요하다고 느끼는 다른 측면이 있습니다. ‘데드 아이즈 소사이어티’라는 이름 자체에 대해 말씀드리자면 어떤 의미인가요?

저는 많은 정치, 정부, 자본주의 시스템과 부패한 네트워크에 의해 눈이 먼 시스템과 사회에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다. 우리는 하나뿐인 지구를 파괴하고 있으며 이것은 이상하고 슬픈 일입니다. 지구 파괴의 일부는 이 자본주의 시스템에서 비롯된 것이며, 우리를 무력하고 나약하게 만듭니다. 하지만 우리 중 일부는 침묵하지 않고 싸울 수 있는 힘을 가지고 있기를 바랍니다.

You said ‘’Sci-fi movies are a part of my influence for atmosphere’’ that’s what we feel, however, this release has stronger aspects of creation. What particular change if it comes to this EP ?

Yes, sci-fi movies and dystopic themes are a big part of my musical influences.

I love the melodies and dark and melancholic atmospheres of sci-fi movie soundtracks. They are strong tools to deliver a powerful message, communicate a feeling, and tell an unforgettable story.

Many of my musical projects are connected to this feeling. For example « Dead Eyes society «  is a perfect representation of that.

공상 과학 영화가 분위기에 영향을 미친다’고 말씀하셨는데, 이번 앨범은 창작적인 측면이 더 강합니다. 이번 EP에서 특별히 달라진 점이 있다면 무엇인가요?

네, 공상 과학 영화와 디스토피아 테마는 제 음악적 영향의 큰 부분입니다. 저는 공상 과학 영화 사운드트랙의 멜로디와 어둡고 우울한 분위기를 좋아합니다. 강력한 메시지를 전달하고, 감정을 전달하고, 잊을 수 없는 이야기를 들려줄 수 있는 강력한 도구이기 때문이죠.
제 음악 프로젝트의 대부분은 이러한 느낌과 관련이 있습니다. 예를 들어 ‘데드 아이즈 소사이어티’는 이를 완벽하게 표현한 곡입니다.

What future will bring for Umwelt? Could you tell us about your further plans?

A lot of beautiful projects are coming, with new Ep’s, remixes and tracks. Of course, I continue working on my label New Flesh Rave Or Die.

I don’t like to reveal too much, but there will surely be something coming on Monnom Black this year.

And I’m so happy to play in my city Lyon our first B2b with Dax J in May 2023 for 20 year anniversary of Nuits Sonores.

움웰트의 미래는 어떻게 될까요? 앞으로의 계획에 대해 말씀해 주시겠어요?

새로운 에피소드, 리믹스, 트랙 등 멋진 프로젝트가 많이 예정되어 있습니다. 물론 제 레이블 뉴 플레시 레이브 오어 다이(New Flesh Rave Or Die)에서도 계속 작업하고 있습니다. 너무 많은 것을 공개하고 싶지는 않지만 올해 Monnom Black에서 뭔가 나올 것이 분명합니다. 그리고 2023년 5월에 내 도시 리옹에서 누아 소노레즈 20주년을 맞아 닥스 제이와 함께 첫 B2B 공연을 하게 되어 정말 기쁩니다.
