Ferdinger returns to his own imprint Life In Patterns with the release of Partly Cloudy (LIP016), a five-track EP that further refines his distinct approach to contemporary techno.
Originally from southern Germany and now based in Paris, Ferdinger has built a clear artistic identity through a blend of 90s-inspired textures and modern production sensibilities, defined by tightly constructed groove systems, hypnotic repetition, and a constant balance between restraint and intensity.
On Partly Cloudy, these elements are expanded into a more reflective and inward-facing framework. Across the record, Ferdinger navigates a wide sonic range, moving from breakbeat-influenced rhythmic structures and dub pressure to acid-driven techno forms, while maintaining a strong focus on physicality and club functionality.
The opening section of the EP is defined by Luxury Beliefs, the only off-beat track on the record, where layered percussion and a hazy, dreamlike ambience establish a more suspended and atmospheric space. This contrasts with I’m Still Here, which follows with a direct, groovy energy and a steady forward momentum rooted firmly in club dynamics. Time Well Spent introduces a slightly more tribal-inflected feel, deepening the rhythmic flow while maintaining a fluid and rolling structure, while Early Onset pushes the intensity further with a driving framework where acid elements cut through the mix, adding tension and sharpness to one of the more energetic moments on the release. The title track Partly Cloudy closes the EP on a more spacious and slightly nostalgic note, offering a reflective ending that softens the physical pressure of the preceding tracks.
While the record remains clearly aimed at the dancefloor, it carries a subtle emotional undercurrent, reflecting a sense of observation toward the current social and global climate without relying on direct narrative expression.
With Partly Cloudy, Ferdinger continues to evolve the identity of Life In Patterns, balancing functional DJ tools with more textured and introspective sound design, rooted in both classic techno sensibilities and a contemporary sonic language.
