Some artists make music. Others build worlds around it.
For Berlin based South Korean artist Short Finger, techno exists alongside Eastern philosophy, Korean shamanic spirituality, contemporary art, and community building. His artistic practice extends far beyond DJing, connecting galleries, rave culture, and multidisciplinary collaborations into a single evolving narrative.
On 30 July, Short Finger joins the KEYI Magazine Fundraiser lineup at Phantom Bar Berlin. In our latest interview, he speaks about the Regis set that changed his life, the role of spirituality in his music, and why reconnecting love and soul remains essential in both club culture and the contemporary art world.
Meet Short Finger.
You’ve been a DJ, promoter, venue director and designer. Which role has taught you the most?
Was Night Manager. I learned a lot from it, how to take care of the night. From artist’s flight, hospitality, tech rider, every weekend even their deep personal requests. I was would love to do it for the night.
A Regis set changed everything for you in 2018. What did it awaken?
His set at Tresor was like infinity colorful railway coming into my ear step by step, couldn’t get out from it for 4hours. It was totally different experience from Seoul, where I started clubbing.
Eastern philosophy and shamanic spirituality run through your music. How do they shape your sound?
Such as my track ‘Let us Hydrate(기우제)‘ it means Korean Rainmaking Ritual Ceremony. I mixed Korean traditional instruments sounds and then raining, thunderstorm recording sounds. Feels like Korean shamans praying and finally rain drops on the dance floor.
This track’s EP is collab with Korean artist ‘Soonjae’ who draws fingerprints, it’s from Roi Perez’s finger, when we had live painting event together in the techno club in Seoul ‘BBCB’. And our sharing thoughts, the most important thing in the dance floor and also this world is the water.
Why is it important for you to connect techno with the contemporary art world?
Because it’s all about the love and soul. We need to fulfill it again.
