Art editorial TRANSCENDENCE by Sergey Skip & interview in English & Korean.

Art editorial delivered by Sergey Skip & team.

Elusive nature of memories, echoes of encounters with people, the ways they can blur and shift over time. Something being recalled comes back blurry and indistinct, being distorted by the passage of time. The series is a reminiscence of fragility and mutability of our dreams, of how memories become illusions, being shaped by the chaotic consciousness. Stylistically it inherits approaches of fashion photography and graphic design with minimalist object-focused compositions. With the intention of finding new ways of contemporary photography expression.

– How would you describe yourself in 3 sentences?

Sergey Skip is a photographer and visual artist based in-between Berlin and Lisbon. In his work he studies transitions of memories into illusions. His fine art photographs are characterized by their dreamlike quality, and often feature abstract & surreal elements that seem to defy rational explanation. Stylistically they inherit approaches of fashion photography and graphic design with minimalist object-focused compositions. With the intention of finding new ways of contemporary visual expression.

– What’s the story behind art direction of this project?

The project started only several months since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Both of the models and the assistant are Ukrainians. One of them, Yelyzaveta, had to escape to Germany recently at that time, because the war came into her city. Unnecessary to say that anything we could really think of were the atrocities that were (and still are) happening in Ukraine.

The original goal was to make some new pictures for Yelyzaveta to help her find model jobs in Europe. I’ve went through some friends in fashion and collected some clothes and masks for styling, including some pieces which were created as a collaboration of Berlin brand FUENF and myself. So this way the β€œfashion” part of the shoot was covered (and exists in a separate editorial). Moreover I’ve also invited a good friend of mine and an amazing actress. The model Valeriia, with whom we wanted to do something together for a long time.

So I started to think of how we could also speak about the war through the images. Of how it is permanently damaging and affecting mental state of Ukrainian people, and perhaps other people who were deeply emotionally (and not only) involved into what was happening. The moodboard was titled β€œTrauma: A careful observation of how the war is forever changing us internally”.

It was split into several parts “pain ↔ anger ↔ derealisation β†’ transcendence?”, which I came up with through reading research papers on PTSD, and also on spiritual healing. So everything on the pictures were supposed to be happening inside one’s subconsciousness. The constantly flickering emotional states which you cannot yet express. A possessed mind suffering from vast force of traumatic events. I think I wanted to capture how very close people around me were feeling, and how I was feeling. Not to tell, but to capture, and to understand. Perhaps you can sense some of that in the images.

– Some photographers work on exact ones and some just put a rough sketch as the results are always different and more experimental anyway. How do you work with mood boards?

With this specific project I’ve actually put quite some effort into the moodboard. I was afraid to loose control on the results. We’ve absolutely ignored it during the shoot (even though i even had it printed with me). Therefore it is good to set the β€œmood” prior to the shooting day. Let everyone express their true genuine creativity on the shooting day.

– Your pictures seem to be like paintings. What is your background in art? Do you use mixed techniques/post production or replying purely on photography?

Thank you. I have no background in art. Apart from slowly getting into the field since a couple of years by practicing visual arts (but not painting) and reading. I’ve studied Engineering Physics. And I have 13 years of work experience in digital & graphic design. The burden of which I’m currently trying to get rid of. For photography post-production I use nothing more than Lightroom. However I do have few optical tricks I use during the shoots.
