Southern Fried: 500 Releases Strong – A Celebration with Fatboy Slim and the Team at Akasha during IMS 2024
Fatboy Slim and the team from Southern Fried recount the history of the label as it approaches its 500th release with a celebratory event at Akasha during IMS 2024.
Fatboy Slim may be a household name, but his label Southern Fried Records has quietly thrived since its founding in 1994 by Norman Cook and Garry Blackburn. Initially an outlet for Cook’s Might Dub Katz alias, the label gained momentum with releases from artists like Space Cowboy and Kurtis Mantronix. It soared to success with hits like Ashley Beedle’s remix of Elton John’s “Are You Ready For Love” and Armand Van Helden’s “My My My” and “I Want Your Soul.”

‘Role Model’ will be available digitally as well as a limited run of 500 acid yellow vinyls from the 17th May 2024 via his label Southern Fried Records.

In their monumental 500th release, Southern Fried Records unveils “Role Model,” marking Fatboy Slim’s first original piece of music for the year. Set for release on May 17th, the track will be available in both digital and physical formats, including a limited edition run of 500 acid-print vinyl records.
“Role Model” boasts a bassline reminiscent of cartoons, accompanied by electro motifs, cowbell clangs, and punchy synth pads. The melody maintains a brisk pace, featuring a rotating, wobbling undertone and ironic vocals that playfully reference X-rated activities far from role-model behavior.
Southern Fried Records has been instrumental in launching the careers of numerous artists, such as Maribou State, Crookers, Eats Everything, and The Black Ghosts.
Norman Cook has been dedicated to fostering new talent, with the addition of three new acts to the label: Meg Ward, Van Damn, and Sam Girling. The label is undergoing a revitalization with a new logo, merchandise, and SFR-branded parties set to grace major UK festivals and conferences like IMS. At IMS, a special party hosted by Southern Fried Records will feature performances by Fatboy Slim, La La, and Hayley Zalassi, with Norman himself spinning tracks in the garden at Akasha under his Mighty Dub Katz alias. It’s an event not to be missed!
