A New Chapter in Öspiel’s Evolving Sound
Brussels-based techno producer Öspiel unveils his latest single, “Tarantulas Are Scary,” out July 16, 2025. The track is the second in a new bi-monthly series of independent releases, following “Your Kiss My Bliss.”
LISTEN TO THE PREMIERE HERE:
Despite its unsettling title, “Tarantulas Are Scary” is a bright and playful 4/4 techno cut. It blends industrial textures with childlike melodies, reflecting Öspiel’s ongoing exploration of duality — moving fluidly between dark and light, nightmare and dream.
We caught up with Öspiel to talk about the new track, the concept behind the series, and how fear can be fun.

Hi Öspiel! Thanks for joining us. Could you tell our readers a bit about yourself?
Hey Keyi, Thanks for having me! My name’s June and I’m a techno producer and live performer. I’m originally from France, but I’ve been living in Brussels for a while now.
I’ve always been drawn to movie soundtracks and fascinated by sound experimentation and avant-garde music. That naturally plays a big role in my work, especially through the focus I put on sound design and storytelling. I also used to co-run a label called Demian Records where most of my material till date has been released and that is currently on hiatus.
Besides the Öspiel project, I also compose music for visual media under my real name, June Ha. I’ve mainly worked in the field of contemporary art on exhibitions, multidisciplinary performances and installations, but also in movies. I’ve recently scored a few films, a truly rewarding experience!
Your new single is titled “Tarantulas Are Scary” — what’s the story or inspiration behind the track?

The idea was to write something kind of sunny and playful, but with a twist in mood or color at some point.
One day, while I was working on the melody in my studio, I got a voice message from my girlfriend. She was freaking out because this huge tarantula –as she called it– had crawled into her bathroom through the window while her mom was visiting. They panicked and decided to just lock the bathroom and leave it. It made me laugh, because I’m really not afraid of insects, and I know the local wildlife well enough to say it was probably just a big cute spider. But the contrast between her fear and how I saw the situation got me thinking.
I liked the idea that a spider can be a threat or a pet, between innocence and fear, and it somehow fit what I was trying to express musically. So that’s where the title came from.
What’s your goal with this steady release schedule?
Lately I’ve been diving into a more personal and contrasting kind of music. It’s still techno, but with a different tone from what I was doing before. It feels softer and brighter in some ways, but also intense, deeper and eerie. It’s very much inspired by that fragile space between a dream and a nightmare.
I wanted to release this project and I have decided to release it on my own, because it allows me to have full control over the music, the release timeline and the visuals. The visual aesthetic is curated in collaboration with the photographer Solveig Herrström who has created the artwork for each single.
I thought it would be interesting to release this project as individual singles, spaced out over time. It allows each track to breathe and be appreciated on its own, while letting the bigger picture slowly take shape as the series goes on. It feels like telling a story that unfolds gradually. That’s why I decided to release one track every two months going from May until November 2025. Together with my team, we’re also working on a little surprise to close the cycle, which will be revealed in the next few months.
Besides this, I have been also working on a collaborative EP with a Berlin-based label that will be released in October. So there is a lot of news on the horizon and I’m excited for all that is yet to come!
